Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need dance experience to Zumba?
No. You do not need dance experience to Zumba. Although it may take 4-7 classes to feel comfortable with the steps, everyone has their own style, form and pace. If you don't like the movement I am doing, you can make up your own!
What type of shoes should I wear for Zumba?
It depends on the surface you will be dancing on. Typically, it is recommended that you wear a dance shoe or a dance fitness sneaker. Try to avoid running shoes or shoes with a heavy tread. If necessary, wear an old pair of shoes that have a worn-out tread. If you are dancing on cement, wear a shoe with a lot of support and cushion. You should also consider your personal shoe needs as in arch support, etc.
Do I have to be coordinated and in great physical condition to take a Zumba class?
Truly anyone can Zumba. Because you can tailor the workout to fit your needs, Zumba is for everyone….all ages, all sizes and all fitness levels. Everyone in the class will be working at different levels of intensity. You need to listen to your own body and pull back the intensity when necessary or increase your exertion if you want more intensity. Of course, always check with your physician before starting any new fitness program.
How many calories can I burn doing Zumba?
Again, this depends on your level of intensity. But it is said that Zumba can burn 500-1200 calories per hour. You will hear me say this over and over…“The harder you shake it, the more calories you will burn!” Unlike other cardio activities, Zumba uses every muscle literally from head to toe which is why it is an incredible fat-burning and body sculpting form of exercise. Think….Dancing with the Stars!
What type of dances will we learn?
We will dance to everything from the Salsa, Merengue, Reggaeton, Cumbia, Bellydance, Flamenco, Mambo, Samba, Hip-Hop and more!
Is it too late for me to start taking a class that has already started?
No. It will bother you more than anyone else in the class. Although it might seem intimidating at first, you just have to go, have fun and understand that the more you come, the easier the steps are to follow and the greater your workout will become. Most classes typically have new students all the time.
My body doesn’t move like that, can I do Zumba?
Of course! My body didn’t “move like that” either. I am not a formally trained dancer. Don’t worry, I will teach you how to shake your hips. It just takes a little bit of practice and the ability to…..
